Test Burns Planned for Kirchoff Prairie

Jamie Killian, TPWD biologist for Wilson and Karnes Counties, is shown marking four 3-acre plots for summer test burns on the Kirchoff Prairie.

The TPWD Controlled Test Burn Plan calls for a single acre of each the four 3-acre test plots to be burned in late summer. Next summer we’ll burn the same acre plus an adjacent acre. The third summer we’ll burn all three acres of each test plot.

The 2019 burn is planned for August, the exact date to be determined by weather conditions.

A purpose of the test is to ascertain whether a summer burn will encourage, suppress, or have no impact on invasive grass species.
