A will can include a bequest to a charitable organization. This empowers you to allocate how or where you want your assets applied. Because wills are fairly easy to modify, you can also keep your bequest up-to-date by checking in with NPAT on where your gift can make the most difference.
Sample Bequest Language for Your Will
Gift for unrestricted use
“I hearby give, devise, and bequeath _________ [written dollar amount] [OR percentage of the residuary of my estate, after all other specific provisions have been fulfilled] to the Native Prairies Association of Texas, a Texas nonprofit corporation and land trust having a principal place of business at PO Box 1101, Manchaca, TX 78652, Federal Tax ID #75-2146108, for its general use and purpose.”
Gift for a preferred but not restricted use
“I hearby give, devise, and bequeath _________ [written dollar amount] [OR percentage of the residuary of my estate, after all other specific provisions have been fulfilled] to the Native Prairies Association of Texas, a Texas nonprofit corporation and land trust having a principal place of business at PO Box 1101, Manchaca, TX 78652, Federal Tax ID #75-2146108. I prefer the funds to be used in support of [program/purpose], however, I impose no legal or equitable obligation in this regard.”
Gift with a specific designation
“I hearby give, devise, and bequeath _________ [written dollar amount] [OR percentage of the residuary of my estate, after all other specific provisions have been fulfilled] to the Native Prairies Association of Texas, a Texas nonprofit corporation and land trust having a principal place of business at PO Box 1101, Manchaca, TX 78652, Federal Tax ID #75-2146108, to be used in support of [program/purpose]. Provided, however, that if the preceding instruction should become impossible or impractical to fulfill as determined by the Board of Directors (or equivalent governing body) of the beneficiary, the beneficiary may use this gift as determined by its Board of Directors (or equivalent governing body).
Gift of real estate
I hereby give, devise, and bequeath all right, title, and interest in and to the real estate located at [address or description of property] to the Native Prairies Association of Texas, a Texas nonprofit corporation and land trust having a principal place of business at PO Box 1101, Manchaca, TX 78652, Federal Tax ID #75-2146108, for the beneficiary’s general use and purpose.
