We will explore examples of a Western Cross Timbers Post Oak/Blackjack woodland with scattered Fort Worth Prairie openings. The topography is mostly flat, with moderate sandy slopes leading out to the west from the woods.
Here’s a small sample of the flora we may encounter: Texas Blue Star (Amsonia ciliata), Barbara’s Buttons (Marshallia caespitosa), Pineapple Cactus (Coryphantha sulcata), Spiny Star (Escobaria vivipara), Engelmann Sage (Salvia engelmannii), Purple Paintbrush (Castilleja purpurea), White Milkwort (Polygala alba), Missouri Primrose (Oenothera macrocarpa), Comanche Peak Prairie Clover (Dalea reverchonii), Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris), Bear’s Foot (Smallanthus uvedalia), Engelmann’s Blatterpod (Physaria engelmannii), American Blue hearts (Buchnera americana), Four Nerve Daisy (Tetraneuris scaposa), Foxglove (Penstemon cobaea) and Rock Sandwort (Sabulina michauxii).

Use of the iNaturalist app during fieldtrips is also encouraged, so valuable data can be contributed to iNaturalist. It can also be a learning tool by using the iNaturalist app to observe as you go along.
