Has Thicketization of the Post Oak Savanna Reduced Groundwater Recharge in the Carrizo Wilcox Aquifer?

April 13, 2023 @ 6:00 pm 7:00 pm

Zoom Meeting

We are all too familiar with yaupon and eastern red cedar thickets. Much of the historical more open canopy Post Oak Savanna with an understory of grasses/forbs has been lost to thicketization, in large part because of fire suppression. Besides the devaluation of the Post Oak Savanna ecosystem, are there other ramifications?

Shishir Basant and Bradford Wilcox, Texas A&M University, along with colleagues, have conducted a study of the impact of thicketization in the Post Oak Savanna on recharge in the Carrizo Wilcox aquifer. The NPAT Fayette Prairie Chapter is delighted to host Shishir and Bradford in a presentation of the results of this study. Do thickets of yaupon and red cedar impact recharge of the aquifer? Is our water supply reduced by thickets? Can the problem be addressed with land management and restoration?
