The Blackland Chapter of Native Prairies Association of Texas welcomes you to our November 2023 general hybrid meeting! **This reservation is for in-person attendees only**
Relax indoors and meet other prairie people while we announce all of our upcoming events and learn about how Julie Mattox is restoring a dairy into a prairie!
While operating her own surveying consulting firm, Julie had the opportunity to explore various ecosystems throughout the US. Working alongside professionals such as paleontologists, archaeologists, biologists and botanists, many of whom were grassland specialists, Julie developed a passion for the prairie ecosystem.
She and her husband relocated to Northeast Texas in 1996. Fourteen years later, she had the chance to purchase a dairy surrounding their original property, and the prairie restoration began. From dairy to prairie is no easy task.
Working with Texas Parks & Wildlife, the NRCS and yes, adding cattle to facilitate the restoration has been an education. It’s a lesson in patience, it teaches the art of observation and interestingly, what cows eat. Through forage testing and analysis there are some very surprising results.
With many challenges along the way, she is open to sharing her full experience and passion for restoring the tallgrass prairie and what cows really like to eat.
Julie currently resides in Yantis with her husband, Jack, her dog, Zoey, and her cat Atticus in a little house on a biodiverse tallgrass prairie.

The size of the meeting room will cap attendees at 35 so please RSVP. We will provide light refreshments AND as a special treat to in-person attendees, Wild Birds Unlimited is graciously offering a 20% discount on shop items, so arrive a bit early to shop!
