Chalk Mountain Ranch Prairie Tour

Saturday, April 29, 2023

REGISTER

Explore a 341 acre Texas Land Conservancy conservation easement in the Lampasas Cut Plain of North Central Texas. Jeff Quayle of Native Prairies Association of Texas will lead this exploration in Somervell County.

We’ll meet in Glen Rose & carpool to the ranch. En route, we will stop on the way to see a rare species only known from Somervell County in North Central Texas. Once at Chalk Mountain, our hike will be on easy to moderate terrain, up to 2.5 miles. Please bring plenty of water. It is optional, but the plan afterwards is to eat lunch at Loco Coyote Grill (1795 County Road 1004) on the west side of Glen Rose. It is a very popular hangout.

Here’s a sample of what might be in flower: Texas Bluestar (Amsonia ciliata), Plains Fleabane (Erigeron modestus), Black Foot Daisy (Melampodium leucanthum), Four Nerve Daisy (Tetraneuris scaposa), Easter Daisy (Townsendia exscapa), Blue Curls (Phacelia congesta), Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis), Shaggy Evolvulus (Evolvulus nuttallianus), Bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), Pink Mimosa (Mimosa borealis), Sensitive Briar (Mimosa quadrivalvis=M. roemeriana), Two Leaf Senna (Senna roemeriana), Stork’s Bill (Erodium texanum), Trailing Ratany (Krameria lanceolata), Engelmann Sage (Salvia engelmannii), Rock Flax (Linum rupestre) and Gray Verbena (Verbena canescens).

Use of the iNaturalist app during fieldtrips is also encouraged, so valuable data can be contributed to iNaturalist. It can also be a learning tool by using the iNaturalist app to observe as you go along.

Organized & led by Jeff Quayle.
