Pat Merkord, Executive Director of NPAT, will be explaining Deer Park Prairie’s management plan as we walk and experience the prairie after its first mowing in about three years. Learn why mowing is necessary for the prairie’s health. Great information for prairie landowners. Photo opportunities abound on the 7 acres left unmowed with Liatris sp. and other late summer wildflowers! After the walk, we will gather in the air-conditioned house for a surprise activity. See pictures of the mowing of Deer Park Prairie on HNPAT website.
Time: August 28, 2014 at 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm (Talks starts at 6:45 pm - 15 minutes earlier than usual)
Please do not park in front of our neighbors’ houses. Extra parking is at the church, Primera Iglesia Bautista, 4316 Luella Ave, Deer Park, TX 77536 only about one long block from the house on the prairie.
Please bring a chair. Although mowed, we will be walking on uneven ground, so wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, long pants, and perhaps long-sleeved shirt. Insect repellent will be handy.
Earlier SAME DAY: August 28 at 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm: Open HNPAT Board Meeting to discuss next year’s plans and the possibility of having a third of the meetings in Houston, a third at Deer Park, and a third in Fort Bend County. If you cannot attend, please reply you suggestions for talks, field trips, and anything you would like to see us do. Pat Merkord is planning to organizing a prairie conference in Houston in May, 2014.
The new Dallas area Chapter has a new name: Blackland Chapter of Native Prairies Association of Texas and it has set its second meeting date. The newly formed steering committee for this chapter met recently at the Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake, Dallas, Texas. They selected 13 counties to include in their new chapter. This area is primarily in the blackland prairie region. The next meeting of the Blackland Chapter will be on Tuesday, September 9th in the auditorium at St. John’s Episcopal School, 848 Harter Road, Dallas, Texas from 6:30 to 8 pm. Meetings after this date will be held on the first Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8 pm so members in this area can put that monthly date on their calendars. This second meeting on Sept. 9th will be a very important one where members will be asked to give input on projects, workshops, field trips and other activities that they would like implemented in the coming year. Congratulations to the new Blackland Chapter of NPAT!
